Could you describe your current role in internal communication and how you think membership with us might support you in this role?

I work as Internal Communications Partner at Moto Hospitality – a busy role with over 6000+ colleagues spread across 53 motorway services! I’ve attended a few IoIC courses over the past year and have found them really useful in supporting my role, giving me the skills, tools and know-how to communicate even more effectively with our complex organisational structure. The IoIC courses give the perfect opportunity to take a step back and reflect along with other like-minded individuals which has been valuable in helping me to drive our communications further, boost engagement and review our channels and processes.

What motivated you to pursue a career in internal communication and what do you enjoy most about it?

I come from a background in marketing and graphic design, so internal communication was fairly new to me. I’ve worked in the role for almost 2 years and have learnt so much. My graphic design skills have been super handy in creating engaging comms for our colleagues and I think I bring a different skillset to someone typically in internal comms.

How has IoIC membership contributed to your professional development and career growth?

I’ve been consistent in logging my CPD points and pushing myself to learn more about the world of internal comms at every opportunity. From listening to podcasts and reading articles to attending the online courses and immersing myself into a variety of events. I was also lucky enough to have a Mentor organised by the IoIC, having someone externally to talk to, bounce ideas and review challenges was a huge support as well as regular check-ins to keep my goals on track.

Can you name one career achievement or project that you're particularly proud of, and why?

Entering Moto into a few different award categories this summer has been super rewarding for the whole team. As the entry itself allows us to take a step back and reflect in showcasing exactly what we feel we’ve done well as a company, from comms and reward to diversity and inclusion. It’s a huge morale boost when we’ve received the news that we’ve been shortlisted – and the icing on the cake if we win!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the internal communication profession?

Make sure you make connections with other people in a similar role to share challenges and goals. The IoIC courses have been really beneficial in meeting other like-minded professionals from other companies. I usually connect with many of them on LinkedIn afterwards to build my network.
