We shine our Member Spotlight on Graham Gartside Bernier. Discover how Graham turned a fortunate "accident" into a true passion for connecting people and shaping workplace culture.
In my role as the Internal Communications Manager at Travel Counsellors, I’m all about creating meaningful connections across a diverse, global team. I handle everything from strategic communication development and engagement initiatives to advising our leadership on impactful messaging. Every day brings a fresh challenge, whether it's driving a digital transformation project or working alongside our People team on our Employee Value Proposition. Membership with IoIC provides a lifeline to best practices, inspiring ideas, and a community of like-minded pros. The networking opportunities and resources from IoIC keep me ahead of the curve, and it's reassuring to have a support network that understands the unique (and sometimes difficult!) challenges of internal comms.
My journey into internal comms began by accident, but it quickly became a passion that I’ve thrown myself into learning as much as I can about. I’ve always loved storytelling and finding creative ways to bring people together, so when I realised I could do just that within a corporate setting, I was sold. The variety keeps me on my toes—one day, I’m building engagement strategies; the next, I’m refining a communications metric. What I enjoy most is that internal comms isn’t just about delivering messages; it’s about creating a community where everyone feels they belong and understands their purpose within the organisation.
IoIC has been instrumental in my growth, offering loads of resources, insights, and professional connections. The chance to connect with seasoned professionals who have “been there and done that” is invaluable, and my mentorship through the IoIC with Verity, an established Director of Comms, has played a huge role in refining my strategic thinking. Constant learning opportunities through IoIC help me stay sharp and allow me to keep honing my skills to drive real engagement at Travel Counsellors. The resources, relationships, and ongoing learning IoIC provides have truly supported my journey from tactical tasks to a strategic approach in internal communications.
One of my proudest achievements was developing a composite KPI metric at Travel Counsellors, now a core KPI regularly reported to the board. Alongside this, I crafted a care-centred communication strategy that truly reflects our community’s voice. My time at TC has allowed me to move from tactical tasks to a more strategic approach, with the invaluable support of my Director of Communication and Chief People Officer. They actively champion my continued learning through IoIC, appreciating the mentorship, insights, and connections it brings. The fresh perspectives I gain from IoIC help us to keep enhancing our culture where everyone feels connected and valued.
A lot! Listen, adapt, and stay curious. Internal comms is all about understanding people and the context they operate in, so take time to listen and really absorb what matters to your audience. Adaptability is key—plans change, projects evolve, and sometimes you need to throw your strategy out the window and start fresh! And finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Every comms professional started out green, and the best way to learn is by being curious. Also, a good sense of humour (and some dramatic flair) is priceless—sometimes you’ve got to laugh your way through the chaos.
I once co-founded a French-Canadian street food business, and it became quite the hit! We attracted a huge following, won culinary awards, and even made it onto BBC’s Million Pound Menu. So, yes, I might be the only internal comms manager around who’s dabbled in poutine and PR at the same time!
