We shine our Member Spotlight on Stephanie Hodgson, who shares how IoIC membership makes her feel supported and connected to a thriving professional community
As the Internal Communications Manager at Nuclear Transport Solutions, I handle channel management, content creation, employee engagement, event planning, and more. Each day brings fresh opportunities - one day I’m filming colleagues at our rail depots, the next, writing newsletters for our seafarers. IoIC membership has been invaluable, providing networking opportunities, best practices, and ongoing learning. Connecting with other internal communicators in the transport sector through the IoIC has shown me that we share similar challenges, making me feel supported and part of a broader community.
I hadn't heard of internal communications until I entered the corporate world, but once I discovered it, I realised it suited my creative side perfectly. What I enjoy most is the variety - no two days are the same, and I’m never bored in my job! The constant change keeps me engaged and motivated.
Early in my career, I completed the IoIC Foundation Diploma, which really helped me understand the role of internal communications in an organisation, how to engage different employee groups, and develop as an IC professional. I made valuable connections during the course and was proud to finish with a distinction! I’m hoping to complete the Advanced Diploma in a few years to continue building on my skills and knowledge.
I’m particularly proud of being the communications lead for the "Stay Alert, Don't Get Hurt" close call initiative, which I worked on with the HSEQ, Security, and Projects teams. The initiative focused on improving close call reporting by introducing user-friendly tools like QR codes, a mobile app, and an intranet page. My role involved crafting clear and engaging communications, including videos and posters, to encourage employee participation. The project resulted in a 185% increase in reported close calls and earned us recognition at the Rail Freight Group Awards, demonstrating its impact on safety and employee engagement.
Always listen first. Understanding the needs and concerns of your audience is key to crafting messages that resonate. Stay adaptable and constantly seek opportunities to learn and grow. And remember - you’re the internal comms expert. While other departments may have their own ideas about communication, trust your expertise and ensure your voice is heard.
I'm a huge Eurovision fan! I've been to two semi-finals live in Turin and Liverpool, and I've been hosting Eurovision parties with my friend since we were 12. It's a yearly tradition that I absolutely love!
