As part of the #IChoseIC campaign, I’m excited to share my career journey and how I discovered my passion for internal communications. My path wasn’t always clear-cut, but it has led me to a role that I genuinely love and find rewarding every day.

At 17, I faced a crossroads that many young people encounter. I was in Sixth Form but felt unfulfilled and struggled to meet the academic expectations I had set for myself. It was a challenging time, filled with uncertainty and self-doubt. However, I decided to take a leap of faith and leave Sixth Form. This choice wasn’t easy, but it was a turning point that set me on a different trajectory.

In 2015, I took my first significant step into the professional world by joining Direct Rail Services (now Nuclear Transport Solutions) as a Business Administration Apprentice. The transition from a traditional classroom setting to a hands-on work environment was daunting, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed. The apprenticeship offered me practical experience, a chance to build confidence, and an opportunity to learn in a real-world setting.

Throughout my apprenticeship and early career, I had the chance to work in various departments including Corporate Services and Human Resources. Each role presented its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. It was during this time I discovered internal communications – a field I hadn’t known existed before. My interest in English, Media, and creativity seemed to align perfectly with this role. I had always dreamed of being a “magazine writer” when I was younger!

As I moved through different roles and gained more experience, it became clear that internal communications was where my true passion lay.

In my current role as an Internal Communications Manager, I’m deeply passionate about my work. My responsibilities include channel management, content creation, employee engagement, and event planning. Each day presents new challenges, and I find immense satisfaction in seeing how effective communication can drive employee engagement and enhance organisational culture.

One of the highlights of my journey has been the amazing development opportunities I’ve had. Recently, I completed my Foundation Diploma in Internal Communications through the Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC). This qualification has been invaluable, providing me with deeper insights and practical skills that have enhanced my role. For anyone new to their IC career, I highly recommend pursuing this diploma - it’s a fantastic way to build a solid foundation and advance your career.

Looking back, I can see how each step of my journey has contributed to my current role. Leaving Sixth Form and embarking on an apprenticeship were decisions that set me on a path of discovery and growth. The skills and experiences gained through various roles have shaped my approach to internal communications and equipped me with the tools to succeed.

I’m proud to be an #IChoseIC ambassador, a role that lets me advocate for internal communications and inspire others to explore this often-overlooked field. Living in Cumbria, I’ve noticed a lack of internal communication roles in the North, which presents an opportunity for growth. By raising awareness and sharing my journey, I hope to encourage more individuals to consider a career in internal communications and recognise its value.

To anyone considering a career in internal communications or exploring alternative paths, my advice is to embrace the journey. Trust yourself and be open to new opportunities, even if they seem daunting at first. Sometimes the unconventional routes lead to the most rewarding outcomes.
