After 10+ years working in brand marketing and communication, I found myself at a career crossroads. The question that kept replaying in my mind was, “Is this what I want to keep doing?”. While I valued the work, I desired something that was more aligned with my passions and values. The challenge was, I wasn’t entirely sure what that “something” was.

While exploring different paths, I discovered internal communication. To my surprise, I realised that I had always assumed the messages we received at work were managed by HR.

As I dug deeper, I saw that internal comms was so much more. Here was a profession that combined storytelling, strategy, and people engagement - all things I love and excel at. If I wasn’t already convinced, meeting professionals in the field sealed the deal; their passion for aligning teams, their ability to connect people to a shared purpose, and their impact on organisational culture deeply inspired me.

Reflecting on my career in brand marketing, I realised I’d already been practicing internal communications, without even knowing it. Some of my most rewarding professional experiences involved connecting teams, fostering engagement, and driving alignment – which I understand now, are all hallmarks of internal comms.

For instance, when the sales team at my company expressed feeling disengaged from brand activities and timings, I launched a quarterly marketing newsletter to bridge the gap. It didn’t just improve awareness, it also boosted engagement, increased campaign-led store activations, and drove a remarkable 9-point market share growth over 2 years.

Another memorable experience was joining a steering committee to address employee engagement survey results. By focusing on the pain points and implementing targeted actions, we improved engagement scores and rebuilt trust within the organisation.

Finally, managing communications for over 1,000 front-line colleagues and stakeholders at various levels taught me the value of clear, empathetic messaging and the power of connection in helping teams achieve shared goals.

These experiences have left me more certain than ever that IC is where I belong. I’m excited to bring this experience to a new organisation that values the power of internal comms, and I’m open to opportunities where I can make an impact.

What makes a workplace thrive? For me, it’s trust, alignment, and a sense of belonging, and internal comms plays a central role in building all three. Despite its importance, IC is still a field many undervalue or misunderstand.

That’s why I became an #IChoseIC ambassador. I’m passionate about championing the internal comms profession, not just by raising awareness but also by inspiring the next generation to consider it as a fulfilling, dynamic career path.

For me, internal comms isn’t just something I do; it’s where I thrive and make the most meaningful impact, and I’m committed to helping others find their passion in internal comms.

This blog is part of our #IChoseIC Series. The #IChoseIC Campaign aims to raise awareness of internal communication as a career pathway and shift the narrative from 'I fell into IC' to 'I chose IC'.
