This past week has been incredibly challenging for everyone in the communications community, and we want to take a moment to acknowledge the immense effort you’ve put into managing communications during these turbulent times. Your resilience and professionalism have truly shone through, and we deeply commend you for it. In moments like these, your commitment to keeping inclusion at the heart of our internal communication is more important than ever.

The recent riots and incidents of racism in the UK have been deeply troubling. As an organisation, we stand firmly against all forms of violence and racism. It’s essential that everyone, no matter their background, feels safe, respected, and included—not just within our organisations, but in the wider community as well.

These events have prompted us to reflect on how we can better support you, especially as the pressure on organisations to take a stand on societal issues steadily increases. The IC Index 2024 has highlighted just how complex this landscape has become, and we want you to know that we’re committed to helping you navigate it effectively.

This situation also brings into focus the vital work we do as a professional community. Together, we create environments where everyone can thrive, built on the core principles of human and empathetic communication. This includes creating safe spaces, listening and fostering meaningful conversations, acting on feedback, and supporting and empowering our managers and leaders as communicators. Ensuring that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) are seamlessly integrated into our organisations is central to this mission.

In the short term, we’ve put together some resources that we hope you’ll find useful. We’ve also announced this week a series of panel events with industry experts to discuss the issues highlighted in this year’s IC Index. One panel will explore the rise of activism and how internal communicators can guide leaders in taking meaningful stances. We’ll also examine the crucial relationship between internal and external communication teams, ensuring that all messaging aligns with the organisation’s values.

Your feedback is incredibly important as we strive to build more practical resources to help IC professionals. We’ve set up a dedicated page on our community platform where you can share your experiences, suggestions, and thoughts on what more we could provide. If you’d prefer to reach out directly, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Let’s make sure we’re equipped to meet these challenges head-on and continue to support each other.
