Sharing my internal communication experience with students and young professionals in Italy

IoIC Board Member and #IChoseIC Ambassador, Laura Colantuono, recently returned to her home country, Italy, to champion internal communication as a profession. Through engaging with students and young professionals, she’s inspiring the next generation to choose IC as a career path.

What I love most about being an IoIC Ambassador is sharing my internal communication experience with students and young professionals. In December, I had the privilege of doing this twice in my home country, Italy.

I was invited by the University of Tor Vergata in Rome to deliver two guest lectures. The first, a two-hour session for international students in the Marketing for Digital Innovation course (part of the MS in Business Administration), focused on the strategic role of internal communication. The second, a half-day class for the Master’s in Economics, Communication and Media Management students, which allowed for a deeper dive into IC science, trends and practical applications.

In both sessions, I presented the IC Index 2024, connecting insights from the UK and Italy. We discussed common challenges companies face, the critical role of IC in building trust and the long-term impact of AI on the profession. Students were especially engaged in exploring how effective IC enhances corporate reputation and business performance, supported by both positive and negative examples.

For the master’s students, many of whom are early-career professionals, I introduced the IoIC Profession Map to highlight career pathways and professional standards in IC. To make the learning experience more interactive, students had the chance to step into the shoes of internal comms professionals tackling practical case studies. Divided in groups, they had to create a high-level comms plan on how to communicate a business initiative, including audiences, key messages, tactics and measurements. Their creativity and strategic thinking truly impressed me.

Over the years, meeting university students and young professionals as an IoIC Ambassador has been a source of immense joy and fulfillment. Their enthusiasm for the field is infectious and I especially love answering their questions about why I chose IC, it’s a topic I could talk about for hours!
